Character
Character Name: Yosuke Hanamura
Fandom: (include link) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Timeline: Post True End
Crimes: disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, indecent exposure, stalking, aggravated assault, conspiracy, smuggling, harboring an illegal alien (/shadow), intent to kill, shoplifting, trespassing, supplying illicit material to a minor, possession of an illegal weapon, vigilantism, obstruction of justice.
Personality:
On the surface, there are a few things you’d probably note about Yosuke right away if you didn’t know him. He comes off as being a pretty nice guy, albeit a bit misguided when it comes to dealing with girls. He’s a bit clumsy (crashing into poles, rolling around in garbage pails, breaking DVDs) a bit dopey, and probably to start, a bit detached from people.
But when you delve beneath the surface of Yosuke, what you see is not necessarily what you get, at least not to a certain degree. Every aspect has something lying beneath it that shapes not only those few aspects, but many other things that also help shape the entirety of who Yosuke truly is.
Having moved to Inaba from the city due to his father’s work, it’s safe to say that Yosuke was initially not a very popular guy. The son of a Junes manager, he was certainly overshadowed by the fact that his father was in essence, “destroying the local businesses” (a term used loosely, as this is the perception of Inaba’s people, to blame the individual rather than the whole company), Yosuke really didn’t have much. The locals looked down on him for this reason, a strong reason for him to isolate himself from his peers. It wasn’t until Saki Konishi said “parents are parents, you are you” that he would begin smile and let it roll off his shoulders. He began to realize that she was right; he couldn’t let everyone else get the better of him. Of course, that wasn’t all there was to it. There was the sheer boredom of Inaba; after all, it was a small town with little to do. It’s not very much in comparison when you’re adjusted to the hustle and bustle of a big city.
These feelings were the spark for Yosuke’s change, however. After the discovery of the TV World and Saki’s death due to said world, there was something finally exciting happening in Inaba. It was selfish and reckless, but he wanted to investigate more – though under the guise that he just wanted to know the whys and hows of his beloved senpai’s death. Finally, he was beginning to feel as if he could have some sort of purpose in Inaba All of these things quickly come to a head when he’s forced to face his shadow self – the manifestation of his repressed, negative feelings.
It’s not until this happens that Yosuke begins to descend into his current self. This, coupled with the friendship he forges with Souji throughout the course of the year, causes him to come to terms with many aspects of himself and what he really feels towards things. The resentment towards living in a small town fades into a fond appreciation for Inaba, his reason for fighting and exploring the TV world changes from seeking excitement to a genuine need to protect anyone else from suffering the same fate as Saki, and of course, he comes to terms with her death. Not only in the way she died, but the feelings he learned she’d harbored towards him all along. Even knowing that she didn’t like him and that he wasn’t truly important to her, he didn’t hold bad feelings about it, using it as a means of growth for himself.
Of course, that’s not all there is to Yosuke. There are other things that are important to note – such as his intelligence. He’s not the smartest guy, at least, not when it comes to his academics. He can be a bit slow on the uptake in that regard, often asking Souji for answers to questions in class and seen frequently worrying during exam time over the answers he chose. It doesn’t seem to take from his common sense and deductive abilities, however. Yosuke was often one of the first to come to logical conclusions about the case and figuring out how things in the TV World were connected to happening in Inaba. Whether it’s sheer laziness or a lack of dedication to school itself is never spoken of, but it’s quite obvious that he’s a lot smarter than what he often gets credit for in a general sense.
When it comes to everything else, Yosuke is usually seen and treated as a mild form of comic relief; his big mouth and tendency to think before he speaks grant him that. But when it’s necessary, he can be as clear-headed as anyone else. In fact, sometimes a bit too much so, to the point where he has a definite streak of pessimism running through him. Despite that, he manages to pull through and find the good in things, likely attributed to the bonds formed with the investigation team, namely, Souji.
His relationship with Souji is something that, without a doubt, had a massive effect on the way Yosuke acts and the person he grew to become through the course of the year they spent as classmates. Going from a poor flirt with walls stacked high around him to… a poor flirt with a group of amazing friends had a serious effect on him. Gone was a bored kid with a jaded sense of what life had to offer. He’d become a young man with a much greater understanding of people and just how important that was. And of course, and understanding of THE TRUTH, because obtaining that is what the game was about, after all.
That’s not to say Yosuke doesn’t have his moments and lapses, though. He was definitely wary of Kanji for a while after interacting with his flamboyant shadow, and he’s definitely thrown his fair share of fits at Teddie and Chie from assorted reasons… most of which stem from money having to come out of Yosuke’s pockets for them. Even towards the end, despite having matured, there was a brief moment where he was prepared to throw all of that out the window in favor of revenge; a serious reminder that Yosuke isn’t entirely grown up and sometimes is thick enough to completely miss the point. Fortunately, he was calmed down and shown the error of his ways – sometimes Yosuke just needs a push in the right direction. He hasn’t completely lost those twinges of selfishness, though they’re much more subdued.
By the time March rolls around, and their journey has ended, Yosuke sees the way things have come full circle. Time marches on, but he’s okay with this. He’s okay with seeing his friend leave (despite not really liking it, of course. Who wants to see the other half of their bromance leave?), and he’s okay with the events that transpired. He’s come to terms with himself as a person and he also knows that no matter what happens in the future, he’ll always have his friends to fall back on.
Abilities: When in the TV world, Yosuke is able to summon Susano-o, his Persona (formerly Jiraiya). Susano-o specializes in Wind summons, as well as healing and other status boosting/nullifying abilities. He’s also pretty mean with a pair of kunai.
Multifandom Test: Yosuke would have an… interesting relationship with Fay (Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle) On the surface, Yosuke would be friendly enough. After all, that guy’s got quite a bit of charisma. It’s likely Yosuke would be able to see that he wasn’t a totally honest person after seeing his own friends have to face their own hardships. He could deal with that, though. It’s not until Fay starts sparkling and making weird jokes and nicknames for Kurogane that’d Yosuke would shy away. Or, not shy away so much as go “DUDE. What?” and find it unusual and a bit perturbing. It wouldn’t keep him from being friendly… but he’d definitely feel uncomfortable in those situations. Hilarity and a bit of freaking out ensues.
It’s likely they wouldn’t be the closest of friends, but friendly acquaintances in passing. There’d always be the potential for something a bit more, but it’s unlikely unless one or both of them were to spill on the things they rarely talk about (Yosuke’s Persona/shadow/experiences in the TV world and Fay’s past).
Third person sample:
Yosuke had forgotten what living the normal, day-to-day life. The past year had been filled with so many things – excitement, terror, loss, fear… it was a never-ending cycle of strange things that kept him on his toes. Things were different now. So, so different.
From his comfortable spot on his futon, Yosuke’s eyes traced the tiles of the ceiling. He was bored. Really, something that had once been his norm felt completely foreign to him. After a moment, he sat up and looked at the clock. It was Sunday; there was nothing for him to do. No school, no work. Just… existing.
For a brief moment, he wondered what would be happening that day if Souji were still in Inaba. It could have been something as mundane as hanging out in the Junes food court, or wandering aimlessly through the flood plan, but somehow, it probably would have been infinitely more interesting than watching the clock tick.
“I guess sitting here moping isn’t gonna help, huh?” He thought aloud as he pulled his trademark headphones away from his ears before he let out a half-hearted, wistful chuckle. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see the picture of the gang. It was only taken a few days ago, but it felt nostalgic either way. All of them, together. That’s how it was supposed to be, right?
An idea sprung to mind and a smile crept onto Yosuke’s face. There was no hesitation in the thought, it was a good idea. He pulled his cell phone from his pocket and dialed. Ring, ring, ring. He waited for the person on the other end to respond, but it kept ringing, much to his chagrin.
“Come on, pick up already, dam—“ The thought was interrupted by voice on the other end. “Oh, hey. Chie, you got a minute—hey wait, stop yelling! Listen, will you?!”
He sighed once more, more out of exasperation than anything else. He didn’t really mind all that much. After all, this was how Chie always was. It made things feel normal. “Anyways, are you busy? I figured we could round everyone and go to the TV World. See Ted and stuff, y’know?”
First person sample:
Please tell me this is a dream. Please. I need to wake up and be in my own bed. Or anywhere but here. I don’t care how real this feels, it’s messed up. Really, really messed up.
[Yosuke’s trying to get his bearings on the situation, but really, he’s just looking around him and getting frustrated.]
What kind of crimes are these supposed to be, anyway?! Stalking? Indecent ex—what the hell?! HELL NO! I’ve never-!
Ugh, whoever’s doing this… very funny. I don’t even know how I got here, and I’m really supposed to believe this? Man, this dream sucks. What a nightmare.
[He lets out a sigh.] Fine. If I have to play along with this… other people can hear this, right? Well, I’m kind of looking for someone. If I got stuck with something like this, they can’t be far behind, right? Uh, just let me know, okay?
Come on, self. Wakeupwakeupwakeup….
