Personality: There are two very distinct sides to Raven - his "Raven" persona, and his "Schwann" persona. However, as separate as he often tries to keep them, they all meld together in various ways to form one distinct person.

When you meet Raven in the game, it's that specific persona that you see. As Raven, he is the sly and persuasive right-hand man of Don Whitehorse and a high ranking member of the Altosk guild. He's chronically lazy, often using his "old age" as reason to be tired; his complaining about walking long distances and doing a lot of work is constant. He's too old to walk through the desert, he's too old to walk through the ice, he's too old to walk through forests, caves, cities... pretty much anywhere, according to Raven. Despite this laziness, though, he is extremely capable. He's often given tasks - very important ones by The Don himself, and though he may handle it grudgingly at times, they always get done efficiently. It appears to surprise Yuri and the others -- between his relaxed attitude, use of slang, and sometimes shady nature (really, popping up out of the shadows just to "tag along" or "help" them at random? Doesn't seem trustworthy at all, now does it?), it's easy to mix him up with any old slacker, but he does a pretty decent job of proving himself when it counts.

He often serves something as comic relief, doing so on purpose to try and keep the atmosphere from becoming too intense. Sometimes it may be aforementioned complaints, though many times, it's of his conquests and his love for women... which gains mixed reactions amongst his travel partners. Estelle has been shown to be uncomfortable with this aspect of him, and as such, it's clear that Raven makes a conscious effort to not direct his passes at her (mostly likely due to her social status.... as well as carry-overs from his Schwann persona). His relations with Judith and Rita are mostly comical (Due to his massive crush on the former and rather volatile banter with the latter), he's capable of more -- he tends to be a bit more serious with Yuri, and even something akin to fatherly when dealing with Karol. His relationship with each character is extremely distinct, especially outside of the comedic context. His nature is genuinely kind, and that leads to him slowly breaking the chains he set for himself. A man that was once detached from the people he traveled with soon became people that he cared for very deeply, to the point that knowing that he would have to do something that would hurt them left him ridden with guilt.

Throughout this first portion of the game, where we learn of Raven and what a perverted old man he can be, we also learn that there's much more than meets the eye, though it's in ways very discreet. He makes vague mentions of his past - being involved in the war that happened ten years prior, and a good friend of his... both of which bring out a more bittersweet, melancholic side of Raven that few ever really expect to see of him. Despite being in one of the most well-known guilds, he seems to have a lot of knowledge about the way the empire runs; not only the surface information, but history, its inner workings, and especially of things pertaining to the Imperial Knights.

And that leads directly into Raven's other side - the Schwann persona. When not assisting Brave Vesperia on their quest, or deal with Altosk/Guild matters, Raven is actually Schwann Oltorain, Captain of the Empire's Schwann Brigade (who also just so happen to be a thorn in Yuri's side on many occasions). While Raven is loud, dramatic, and lazy, Schwann is much more serious, quiet and observant to the situations around him. He is highly respected and well-loved by those who serve under him. He's much more serious about his situations outwardly; even going as far as to stand against his friends for what he believed was the good of the Empire. Not much is really seen of his Schwann persona, though you get a fair idea of it from his fight with Brave Vesperia. Being responsible for the things that happen to Estelle, he harbors an extreme guilt, and is prepared to leave himself the die, wanting to give Brave Vesperia the opportunity to live on. He viewed himself as a dead man - a man who'd been living the past ten years with a heart made of blastia. He didn't have reason to live, and his actions had only exacerbated the feelings he was harboring.

Well, until he realized he was wrong.

Yuri, and the rest of Brave Vesperia in that time seem to get through to him. That need to die was replaced - he was given a new lease on life, and these people that he had followed around mainly for one specific cause had become a group of people that were now irreplaceable to him. His guilt is not something that could be removed, but the clear concern the others showed for him - and even their colorful ways of welcoming him back meant that Raven wasn't a dead man, but a man who needed to live. With this, he becomes a little less strict about the distinctions between "Raven" and "Schwann." He offers sound advice to the Schwann Brigade, all the while claiming that he isn't Schwann at all. He somehow finds a way to let these personalities meld - the loud, lazy flirt is more prominent, perhaps more true to his true self. But the serious nature, experience, knowledge, and training from his life as Schwann rear their head often in the latter half of the game, showing that he's not stupid - he's a smart man who's grown up more from his experiences with a group of kids and twenty-somethings than he was able to all on his own in the years prior.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
For his strengths:
-He's skilled battle, both with weapons (bows and short knifes), as well as his ability to use his artes.
-He is a decent cook, who excels mostly in making sweets and desserts.
-He is kind and friendly in most cases, certainly chivalrous when it counts.
-He's a good negotiator, well-experienced in life and highly knowledgeable about many things when it comes to Terca Lumireis.

-He's kind of a pervert sometimes.
-He's weak to Judith. And her boobs.
-Tends to put his foot in his mouth often with Rita
- Is a massive whiner about a number of things
-Has a Blastia heart (not relevant in the setting, but pretty important to the game's plot)

First Person Sample:

So, this place really is all about the walking, isn't it? [He sighs heavily.] I'm not sure how much longer these old bones are gonna hold out! Somethin' like this make be good fer all you kids, but and old man like me needs to just sit down once in a while and take things easy, you know. A whole world based on walkin' around and fighting with monsters, huh...

Sure is different than what I'm used to, but from the looks of it, there's plenty'a people back home that could probably learn from livin' like this. Haha, wouldn't that be the day. [He looks over his shoulder, winking in someone else's direction.] Whaddya say, Judith? Maybe you wanna settle down and make a life with Old Raven here in Johto....

Oh, and you can come too, Rita. [And this is about the time where he ducks his head to try and avoid Rita punching him in the face! Feed cut get.]

Third Person Sample:

His eyes gazed from the map, to the road ahead of him, to the map again, and then to the road once more. Raven couldn't help but let out the most exasperated sigh; it wasn't really that he couldn't walk all this way, he just didn't want to. He'd actually felt healthier than he could remember in the last ten years or so -- why, he wasn't exactly sure, but he figured it had to something to do with the fact that nobody had been able to use their blastia since they woke up in this place. His lips curved into a frown... if that was the case, then in theory, would he be affected? He wasn't sure. It was entirely too early to tell, and with Rita being so frustrated with just about everything they'd encountered so far, Raven didn't quite feel like bringing it up just yet.

"Havin' Ba'ul would be nice right about now," The words were thoughtless as they escaped his lips, the complaints more a result of habit than desire at this point. He heard an affirmative sound pass Judith's lips and he turned to her. What better time than now to see what he could do, right? A weakness, some loneliness... maybe he could snag a beautiful, elusive Krityan for himself. His cheeks flushed a shade of pink as a goofy smile appeared on his face. "You know, if it gets lonely at night without him, I've got enough room in my tent for two..."

Of course, were that to actually happen, it wouldn't be the only tent Raven pitched that day. It was the same as always though - a flattered rejection and he sighed dramatically. "Oh, be still my beatin' heart! Will I ever be able to win this lady's fine love?"

He fell to his knees, and was immediately greeted with two things - a punch to the back of the head from Rita, and a few pecks in the forehead from his Murkrow, Canary. Judith simply chuckled - after all, the melodramatics were a Raven trademark. It didn't matter where they were -- he would do this so long as the opportunity presented itself. And really, it helped ease the strange, unsure tension that surrounded the three in their new setting.
