Personality: For the most part, Zoro is a pretty serious guy. He's stoic and stern, and not very quick to get very close to people. Most of this is due to his lifestyle; his desire to accomplish his goals surpasses most everything else in his life. In order to become the world's greatest swordsman, he knows he needs to be focused and serious about taking the steps to achieve this. While he does have his own personal Bushido-like code (like to never attack someone with their back turned, because a wound to the back is a swordsman's greatest shame), he's also not afraid to up the intimidation factor - hell, he's not afraid to kill if the situation calls for it. He's the type who would rather fight or die trying than give up - he's very adamant about this from his first appearance in canon. He lives for combat - any chance to fight is a good chance to fight, as far as he's concerned. When it comes to fighting, Zoro is generally pretty good at keeping his composure; often times, he seems to lack any sort of care one way or the other towards things, seeming indifferent or uninterested in many things and choosing to let fate decide his path for him.
Despite this, though, Zoro is a very kind-hearted person underneath his rugged shell. It's shown early on, with his desire to protect a little girl, and even put his own life at stake for it -- but it continues on throughout the course of the story. When only knowing Robin for a short time - and still not having trust for her - Zoro takes a surprisingly chivalrous path in protecting her when she was nearly killed by Enel in Skypiea. Generally though, he's usually pretty uninterested advances from women, usually completely oblivious to both Robin and Nami's blatant sexuality at times. (Although anyone's interest would pale in comparison to Sanji's over-the-top nature, it's still exceptionally disinterested). He cares deeply about his crew - though he originally had said he would turn on Luffy if the situation called for it, as time passes, he becomes more attached to the others. Zoro is extremely loyal to his captain (to the point of risking his own life to save Luffy's), but on top of that, he's extremely protective and brotherly with Chopper; has a sibling-like rivalry with Sanji, and is often greatly admired for his coolness and strength by Usopp. His relationship with each of the Straw Hats is very unique, and clearly very important to him.
Zoro can be very cool and collected in battle - and even be able to not take battles personally (forming alliances and gracefully winning against opponents), but his patience tends to end on the battlefield. Namely with his crewmates, Zoro's fuse can be very short, and he'll react to things in an over-the-top, comical way - jaws dropping, shark toothed, ridiculous anger, complete with needless yelling and the like. This is perpetuated the most by Sanji, but is definitely not limited to anyone else when the crew pisses him off or makes ridiculous decisions that he can't back, Or someone teases him. Especially when someone teases him. On top of that, he's got absolutely no sense of direction, and is capable of getting lost when running straight. His sense of direction extends to going "up" instead of "north" on one occasion. Yeah, his sense of direction is very special.
Things are a bit different when it's not his own battle, though. If he disagrees with the general plan the crew makes, especially when they're thinking impulsively, he tends to be the voice of reason and try to talk them down a bit. It's a bit contradictory sometimes though - he tends to listen to Luffy's orders without question most of the time, and even tends to rush into things on his own without much of a plan. However, when he's not doing either of these things, his excellent perception allows him to view a situation from all sides in an objective way, often finding a good approach to the situation that works for everyone.
Sometimes, he says absolutely ridiculous things in a completely serious manner without realizing it, implying that his reasoning can sometimes be ridiculous (such as when he said that everyone should pose when they would be encased in wax so that they'd look "cool," or any time he thinks cutting off a limb is an acceptable means of escape from being tied up). He also has a great deal of pride about his bounty - despite formerly being a bounty hunter, showcasing a shift in his mentality from his past. In addition to all of this, Zoro is incredibly strong and resilient, able to overcome serious injury (taking on all of Luffy's injuries and fatigue on top of his own) with little mental fatigue - he was able to get back to his normal state of mind after a little contemplation shortly after waking up and recovering physically.
Zoro is pretty much a line-faced idiot with no sense of direction, extremely loyalty, and monstrous strength.
Abilities:
Most notably, Zoro is an extremely skilled an accomplished swordsman. While he's good with one and two swords, his signature style is the Santouryuu - the three sword style he has a number of techniques using that and it's a primary part of most of his fights. On top of that, he is excellent in hand to hand combat, is extremely agile and tends to recover from injury - both minor and serious - at extremely impressive speeds, usually to the point where he's up and fighting again long before any normal human being would even be able to stand. He's pretty resilient, also able to fight through his injuries when the time calls for it.
Multifandom Test:
Zoro would have nothing short of an interesting relationship with Umi Ryuuzaki of Magic Knight Rayearth. Zoro's serious nature would likely be put off by her at first - her tendency to be a bit spoiled and bratty would definitely get under his skin. Not being the type to shy away from a completely ridiculous argument, he'd probably spend a good deal of time arguing with her at first, even going so far as to tell her off for her attitude.
Once he got past that, though, he'd get along with her. They're both very strong-willed, determined people who can accomplish a lot when they set their minds to it. Even though she's not a pirate, or anything of the sort - he'd be able to see her abilities to be a good pirate if she wanted to. On top of that, her skill at fencing makes her adept at putting up a good fight, which is something Zoro loves.
He'd have no qualms sparring with her on a regular basis, so long as she understood that he'd never dream of going easy on her just because she's a girl. They'd be able to learn a lot from one another, both in terms of fighting and general social skill, though they'd still have their fair share of ridiculous arguments.
Third person sample:
Weather never seemed to matter to Zoro. On a cold, snowy day, he was the type to go for a swim - so it was no surprise that on the hottest day of the year, he was running around on the hottest day of the year.
Not that it was really part of his plan, of course.
The ship had docked at on a summer island with the intent of stocking up on supplies; Usopp was keeping watch of the ship right now, while the others went about their business (namely, Nami was clothes shopping, Luffy was eating everything in sight, and Sanji was looking for nearest girl to get a nosebleed over), Zoro had his own plans. Three swords that were in need of sharpening; their blades had dulled from the intensity of use in recent months. He didn't get very far, though - not before running into a couple of Marines who'd recognized him from his bounty poster.
And really, that would have been fine. It's not as if Zoro had a reason to run. It wouldn't have been the first time he had to fight them, and it sure as hell wouldn't be the last, either. But if he was going to fight, he wanted it to be something close to fair, something that wasn't going to happen with his swords being sharpened in the shop. The plan was to go back and get them before the two Marines found him.
Except he turned in the wrong direction, and was now lost in the outskirts of the small port-town.
"...The hell did that shop move to?" He stopped running briefly, taking a moment to catch his breath. Surrounded by trees and no sign of the small store, there was obviously only one thing to do - blame the shop itself for not being where he thought he last saw it, of course. Logical reason would have told Zoro to turn back and go the way he came - it wasn't as if the Marines saw the direction he took, in any case. But no, that would be entirely too easy, so he took off running again, further into the wooded area. It was a small island, so it couldn't have been that far to get back where he started, right?
Probably not, but it was worth a shot as far as Zoro was concerned. Maybe if those damn stores didn't keep moving around, he'd be able to find them easier.
First person sample:
[Fun with buttons! Not with any real intent but trying to figure out how the communicator works, Zoro turns it on in a fit of frustration. He's already screamed and yelled, completely confused by his current situation. Especially the fact that his swords have been taken from him. He's really not a happy camper right now. ]
...The hell kinda thing is this, anyway? Tch... couldn't just use a Den Den Mushi and be done with it?
[And as he realizes this thing is working, he mind goes into its one-track mode. If he's here, the rest of the crew must be too, right?]
Oi, oi! Where the hell did you all get lost to? Let's get movin'. I don't care what this stupid thing says, we've got things to do. Like get our crap and get the hell out of here.
